Artist Statement Builder

Creative Capital, a non-profit foundation supporting emerging artists, approached me with a text-based curriculum hosted on Canvas. They wanted to make their existing curriculum (particularly the exercises) more engaging while keeping the content the same.

I redesigned the Course in Rise 360 to make the content more engaging for learners. I also reimagined the text-based course exercises as immersive interactive activities. One such exercise was the Artist Statement Drafting Exercise

When I redesigned the exercise, I had busy, early-career artists in mind who might lack experience and confidence authoring professional documentation. After consulting with several early-career artists, I found that they most needed help overcoming the anxiety involved with putting words on the page.

My goal for the exercise was for artists to write and download a complete draft of their artist statement by the time they completed the exercise.

I turned the exercise prompts provided by Creative Capital into an interactive tool (The Artist Statement Builder) that walks artists through each step of writing an artist statement. I used variables and custom JavaScript in Storyline 360 to enable users to write and download a complete draft of their artist statement as they complete the exercise.
